(Beijing, February 24) The "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 16th FINA Diving World Cup concluded its six days of competitions at the National Aquatics Center this evening as host China claimed seven out of eight titles of the event. German sensation Sascha Klein captured the gold of the men's 10m platform.
In the women's 3m springboard event, Olympic champion Guo Jingjing of China failed in completing a 107B dive, on which her compatriot Wu Minxia did a better job to seize the title. The 20-year-old rookie diver Sharleen Stratton of Australia came from nowhere to take the bronze as World Championships 1m titlist Blythe Michaela Hartley of Canada and Australian Chantelle Newbery of Australia sat in sixth and seventh tandem.
In the 3m synchronized springboard finals, Wu Mingxia/Guo Jingjing had little trouble in defending the title as they led in each of the five rounds. The silver went to Julia Pakhalina/Anastasia Pozdnyakova of Russia, who trailed by 32.49 with the Chinese. American pair Ariel Rittenhouse/Kelci Bryant came third.
China's Chen Ruolin and Wang Xin, both 16, settled for first and second in the women's 10m platform. In the World Championships last year, Wang beat Chen in the finals of the same event. Mexican Paola Espinosa gained the highest score of the night in both 307C and 407C to finish third. World Championship winner Emilie Heymans of Canada and Sydney Olympic champion Laura Wilkinson of USA had to be content with fourth and 12th respectively.
Except their fierce competition in the individual event, Chen Ruolin and Wang Xin put up good teamwork in the 10m synchronized platform as they won over runners-up Emilie Heymans and Marie-Eve Marleau of Canada by 35.61 points. Melissa Wu/Briony Cole of Australia stood third.
On the men's side, the World Cup was a place for China's He Chong where dreams came true as he grabbed the 3m springboard title, his first gold of the diving "Grand Slam" events (Olympic Games, World Cup and World Championships). 2007 World Champion Qin Kai fell 15 points behind to clinch the silver as Yahel Castillo of Mexico succeeded in completing 5355B (DD 3.9) to take the bronze. World Championships double winner Alexandre Despatie didn't bring out his best and had to settle for fifth.
China's Wang Feng/Qin Kai got reign in the men's 3m synchronized springboard as they led 43.47 over Russians Dmitry Sautin/Yuriy Kunakov. Canadian pair Alexandre Despatie/Arturo Miranda finished closely in the third place.
Today's men's 10m platform finals were highlighted by the performance of German sensation Sascha Klein, who obtained the highest score of the day on a 5255B (DD 3.8), earning 108.30 and 566.85 on aggregate to claim the title, 23.45 more than China's Zhou Luxin. Aemerican David Boudia took the bronze with 526.65 while Lin Yue of China finished fourth.
The 10m synchronized platform gold went to China's Lin Yue/Huo Liang, who prevailed by 15.72 points over silver medalists Patrick Hausding/Sascha Klein of Germany. Britain's Blake Aldridge/Thomas Daley took the bronze.
