Day 5 preview: Chinese divers aim at gold

(Beijing. 23 February) - Lin Yue (CHN) will aim to secure his second gold at the 16th FINA World Cup in the individual men's 10m platform after he claimed the men's 10m platform synchro title with partner Huo Liang (CHN) on Friday nights. Guo Jing Jing (CHN) will also attempt to prove her invincibility when she competes in the women's 3m springboard semifinals.

Men's 10m platform preliminaries:

Favourites:

Chinese Platform masters, Zhou Luxin and Lin Yue are the clear favourites and are ranked No.1 and No.2 in the world respectively in this event. Zhou grabbed silver at the 2007 World Championships in Melbourne, Australia and Lin won the title at the 2007 World Series in Sheffield, Great Britain.

Jose Guerra of Cuba is a silver medalist in this event at the 2005 World Championships in Montreal, Canada. Currently ranked third in the world in this discipline, Guerra also won the ttitle at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Australian diver, Matthew Helm won silver at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. The Aussie diver retired once after winning this event at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia. However, he returned to the pool gunning for his third Olympic Games here in BeiJing.

Top 18 divers will go through to the semifinals on Sunday.

Wu Minxia (CHN) has set her sight on grabbing the title in this event on

her home soil - she performed flawlessly throughout the preliminaries and qualified first by a wide margin of 37.40 points, far ahead of the pack. She won gold in this event at the 2006 World Cup in Changshu, China.

Reigning world champion in this event, Guo Jing Jing (CHN) was nowhere near her top form in the preliminaries, finishing second with a total score of 328.60 points. However, the current world No.1 in this event, Guo has a number of titles under her belt, including gold in this event at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

Blgthe Michaela Hartley (CAN) claimed gold in this event at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia. She has won a number of medals in her career, including silver at the 2008 Grand Prix circuit at Madrid this January.

Christina Loukas (USA) performed solidly in the preliminaries. The American diver came sixth at the 2007 Grand Prix in Fort Lauderdale, the United States. She is currently ranked 63rd in the world in this event.

18 divers will compete in this event and top 12 divers qualify for the finals tonight.
